What does the energy dependency rate mean?
What the latest data show
For 2024, Estonia is at one end of the ranking with 4.6 %, while Malta is at the other end with 98.4 %. The range between them is +93.8 pt, compared with 57.3 % for the EU-27.
What is being measured
The energy dependency rate measures the share of energy needs covered by net imports. A lower rate therefore indicates less reliance on external energy supplies.
How to interpret the result
The rate does not by itself summarise energy security: supplier diversity, storage, interconnections and the structure of the energy mix also matter.
METHODOLOGY
Ranking methodology
To avoid misleading comparisons, EnergyBoard only ranks countries with a value for the same period as the EU-27. Missing values are never replaced by zero.
