Power and energy units

MW

Megawatt

A unit of power. It describes an instantaneous production or consumption capacity.

MWh

Megawatt-hour

A unit of energy. 1 MWh is the energy produced or consumed by 1 MW over one hour.

GWh

Gigawatt-hour

An energy unit equal to 1,000 MWh. EnergyBoard uses it for annual electricity generation.

TWh

Terawatt-hour

An energy unit equal to 1,000 GWh, or one billion kWh.

Oil equivalent

Tonne of oil equivalent

A conventional unit used to compare different forms of energy.

kgoe

Kilogram of oil equivalent

One thousandth of a toe.

Mtoe

Million tonnes of oil equivalent

Used for national and European energy consumption. 1 Mtoe equals one million toe.

Prices and productivity

€/kWh

Euro per kilowatt-hour

A price paid for a quantity of energy. EnergyBoard uses it for electricity and gas prices.

€/kgoe

Euro per kilogram of oil equivalent

An energy productivity unit. It expresses economic value produced per kgoe of energy used. A higher value means more economic output for the same amount of energy.

Percentages and comparisons

Percentage

A relative share out of 100.

Percentage point

The arithmetic difference between two percentages. Moving from 20% to 25% is +5 percentage points.
