Understanding electricity prices in Europe

How Eurostat measures household electricity prices and why European countries can differ so widely.

Comparing electricity prices between countries requires more than looking at a single number. The period, consumption band, taxes and unit must all match.

A statistical price, not a retail offer

EnergyBoard uses Eurostat household price data for band DC, corresponding to annual consumption of 2,500 to 4,999 kWh. This common band makes cross-country comparisons more meaningful.

Taxes matter

Eurostat provides several tax levels. EnergyBoard rankings use I_TAX, the price including all taxes and levies. Other levels help distinguish taxation from the underlying energy and network components.

Many factors shape the final price

Generation mix, gas prices, hydropower availability, nuclear output, renewables, interconnections, network costs and public policy can all affect household prices.

Compare the same period

Household prices are reported half-yearly. EnergyBoard only ranks countries with a value for the same period as the EU-27.
