What is a kWh?

The difference between kW and kWh, with simple examples for reading energy data.

A kilowatt-hour (kWh) is a unit of energy. A kilowatt (kW) measures power.

Power versus energy

A 1 kW appliance running for one hour uses 1 kWh. Running for two hours uses 2 kWh.

Why EnergyBoard uses €/kWh

Using euros per kWh makes household electricity and gas prices easier to compare.

kWh, MWh and GWh

1 MWh equals 1,000 kWh and 1 GWh equals 1,000 MWh. National statistics often use much larger units than household bills.

Price per kWh is not the whole bill

Fixed charges, subscriptions, taxes and total consumption also affect annual expenditure.
