Understanding gas prices in Europe

Consumption bands, taxes and units: the essentials for comparing household gas prices.

Household gas prices vary by country and by consumption profile. EnergyBoard uses Eurostat band D2, covering annual consumption from 20 to 199 GJ.

Why display €/kWh?

Gas statistics may use different energy units. EnergyBoard displays prices in euros per kWh for easier reading and comparison.

Three tax levels

Eurostat separates prices excluding taxes, excluding VAT and recoverable taxes, and including all taxes. EnergyBoard rankings use the all-tax price.

Missing countries

Not every country publishes every household gas series. EnergyBoard keeps missing observations as missing rather than replacing them with zero.

What drives differences?

Supply contracts, storage, infrastructure, import dependency, regulation, taxation and seasonality all play a role.
